Obituary of Ilse Schmitt

Please share a memory of Ilse to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Ilse was born in Jettenbach, West Germany on March 28, 1928. She married her sweetheart, Willi, on September 11, 1948. Willi and Ilse had twin daughters, Lieselotte and Anneliese, while living in Germany. They emigrated to the U.S. in April, 1953 and settled in Ridgewood, Queens. Two additional daughters, Erna and Arlene, were born while living in Ridgewood. After the family moved to Franklin Square, Ilse went to work for the Sewanhaka Central High School District. She retired as Kitchen Manager in 1995 from Carey High School where she always took care of the students and their lunches. Ilse had 8 grandchildren, 2 girls and 6 boys. Michael was somewhat of a mischievous boy. Oma would have no problem chasing him around waving her wooden spoon (she was always cooking something in the kitchen) when he misbehaved. On another note, when Rich asked permission of Ilse and Willi to marry their youngest daughter, Arlene, he still says “they actually never answered the question”. She spent much time in Vermont and New Hampshire visiting 4 of her grandsons. She always helped babysit her grandchildren whenever she could. After she finished work, she would often times drive to Levittown to watch Stephen and LeighAnne. Her grand-daughter, Michelle, blessed her with her first great grand-daughter and she now has 5 great grandchildren altogether. As many of you already know, Ilse was always busy and never rested until everything was cleaned up or put away. She didn’t allow time for herself because she always put everyone else first. During the last few years, Ilse was provided the highest quality home care with the help of her two phenomenal aides, Melissa and Margaret; and Ilse’s family is ever so grateful for their help, love, and support.
