Obituary of Agnes Burro

Please share a memory of Agnes to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Agnes was born on November 26, 1939 in East Meadow, NY.  She was a resident of Franklin Square for 74 years, and a lifelong Parishioner of St. Catherine of Sienna Church.  In September 2013, she became a resident of Ozanam Hall Nursing Home.  Agnes was the beloved daughter of the late Pasquale (Patsy) Burro, and Lydia (Lena) Burro.   She is survived by many loving cousins including Joanne Burro-Mason, Alan Mason, Anthony Burro, Dan Burro and Phyllis Michaels.  She was a treasured and lifelong friend of Helen and Vinny Melia, Rose Palminteri, Sandy and Abe Persaud, Evelyn Latanza, Joy Wilson, and Joycie.  Her expanded family included the children and grandchildren of her friends and neighbors, and she enjoyed keeping up with all the events and accomplishments in their lives.  In recent years, her circle of friends expanded to include Betty and Chris Buschhorn, Julia, Rita Vernino, Ana, and so many other wonderful ladies she met at Ozanam Hall Nursing Home, who also became her extended family.  While at Ozanam, Agnes got much satisfaction from assisting others in any way she could. She also spent lots of time teasing and joking with her caregivers and had special relationships with each of them. When the time came that she required extra care herself, she was overcome with gratitude for the ways in which her caregivers tended to her needs.  In her final days, she often spoke about how much love and appreciation she had for each and every person that cared for her.
Some of Agnes’ favorite pastimes included watching baseball, a hobby she shared with her father; tending to her garden and planting vegetables; admiring the dogwood tree outside her front door; walking the neighborhood with her mom, arm in arm, to visit all her neighbors; shopping with her friends; eating out—especially Chinese food and ice cream; bowling; and time spent with her dog Spotty. While living at Ozanam, she enjoyed many activities, including day at the races and Bingo.  Her favorite TV shows included the Hallmark Channel Christmas specials, The Price is Right, and Dancing with the Stars.Together with her cousins and friends, Agnes was able to spend the last four years accomplishing her “bucket list”.  Her list included going to the Bronx Zoo, an upstate vacation, attending local Italian Feasts in the summer months, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Disney on Ice, Jersey Boys, on Broadway, a visit to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, gambling at Belmont Raceway, shopping for beautiful things to wear, seeing the Christmas lights at a beautiful house display in Whitestone each year, visits to Milleridge Inn with the Bushhorn family, Christmas with Julia, holidays spent with family, and eating out at her favorite places as often as possible.
Agnes conquered life’s challenge with a brave, open, and loving heart. She had a deep, abiding faith in God which saw her through hard times and gave her great joy in good times.  She was a loving, kind, generous and caring friend to so many. We share Agnes’s gratitude to the friends who became family, and the wonderful staff at Ozanam who treated and loved her like family when she needed it most.
