ALTMAYER, Fortunata (Narda) Vitanza, age 91, of West Hempstead. Devoted wife of the late Ronald, caring mother and mother-in-law of Nancy and Peter Silver, proud grandmother of Harrison and Emily Silver. A graduate of Hunter College High School and Hunter College class of 1943, she subsequently earned Master’s Degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now NYU) and in Computer Science from Stony Brook University. A pioneer in traditionally male dominated fields, she held technical positions at Clark Thread, Bell Laboratories, Sperry Corporation, and Republic Aviation, finally retiring as Senior Engineer at Grumman Corporation after a 25 year career with that firm. Fiercely independent, she was inquisitive and vibrant until her last days. Hers was a life well lived, and she will be missed. Reposing at Krauss Funeral Home, Inc., 1097 Hempstead Turnpike, Franklin Square. Visiting hours Monday 2-5, 7-9pm. Funeral Mass Tuesday, 9:30am at St. Catherine of Sienna RC Church. Interment at Holy Rood Cemetery.
