I did not know Dr. Mortimer. I just heard of her passing in the ABWP newsletter. I am not a physician. I do know that we have lost a massive talent. I am devastated that the pain was too great for Nakita to bear any longer. My deepest condolences to all who were lucky enough to know and love her. There are so few Black, female doctors, and in her specialty VERY few. All resident physicians deserve better treatment. It's disgusting and despicable how they're used. Just because it's always been that way doesn't mean it needs to continue, now that we are supposed to know better.
I'm sure the capitalist patriarchy is heartily patting itself on the back for stopping another woman they could not control...

We still struggle to accept the tragic loss of our talented, intelligent, and promising intern Dr. Nakita Mortimer. For those of us who had the opportunity to work with Nakita during the last few months, it was clear she was an exceptional leader and compassionate physician dedicated to creating a better world. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Nakita's friends and family and mourn this incredible loss for the Montefiore Einstein community and all who had the opportunity to know her. Sending sincere condolences, light, and love on behalf of myself and the GW Internal Medicine Residency Program to Nakita’s family and friends. I also send prayers of peace and comfort for her family and loved ones.
We will miss Nakita’s infectious laugh, radiant energy lighting up the room, and how she challenged us all to do more and be better for patients and each other. Nakita was a fierce force in medicine and medical education who lived by example but more importantly, she was a daughter, a family member, a friend, a classmate, a colleague, a mentor, and a mentee who spoke power and breathed energy into others including me. To know or even witness Nakita in action was a blessing and May her memory be a blessing as well.
May Nakita’s beautiful life and tragic death inspire us to do more collectively in our daily fight for Justice, equity, medical trainee wellbeing, and dismantling systems that prevent progress.

Nakita the first time I met you we were working on the same team and I was struck by your confidence, intelligence and unrelenting spirit and liveliness. You had so much disregard to the formalities of medicine and rounds, and I, a new fearful intern in a foreign healthcare system, was in awe of the lightness and ease by which you seemed to brush it all off. When you so boldly took the risk of announcing our union, I again stood hiding in the back in awe of your fire. Your death is a great and incomprehensible loss but I hope it gave you the peace you sought.

I've only learned of Dr. Mortimer today, but I feel like I just lost a family member. Not only because she was a black female physician, representing 3% of physicians, but because she represents a significant percentage of the medical students, trainees and practicing physicians who manage depression and suicidal thoughts on a daily basis. Yes, the medical system needs to change and support medical learners at every stage. I also believe that those of us who have managed to survive despite the common mental chaos we have experienced need to "come out of the closet" and share what tools, methods and strategies you have used to survive. This will give hope to the current and future generation of healers and ultimately put an end to the unfortunate statistic of 300-400 med students, residents or practicing physicians dying by suicide each year. Where are the surviving doctors willing to throw away ego and stigma in order to help save their fellow colleagues? #KeepHealersSAFE.
