My condolences to the family and coworkers. As a rookie NYC transit cop assigned to District 1 in 1987, I had the privilege of meeting the #1 uniform cop in the largest transportation Police Department in the world. Ruppe physically was a giant, and loved being a cop. In particular, capturing felons in and around 42nd Street in Manhattan.
I came to Ruppe’s attention when I was told I had the second highest felony arrest record to him - the perennial leader. It was the greatest compliment in the world when Ruppe told me that all the fellow cops told him that I was going to be the next “Ruppe”. I would do my best to make him proud being chosen in 1991 as the #1 Transit Authority employee/and Top Cop in the subway by CBS. I was proud to continue his legacy after his retirement. Ironically, both of us were originally from Ridgewood, Queens and moved out to Long Island. He will forever be remembered in the lives of all the people who he touched.

Helmuth was a great influence on many Transit cops! He was always good for a joke or funny story as well as a serious tidbit of information to help mold a rookie. May God rest his soul and give Ingrid peace in these trying times.

My family and I had the pleasure of knowing “Mr Ruppe” because my dad worked with him in the 80s. He always came by the house to visit us in neighboring Cambria Heights, Queens to chat. This was a shock to all because I can’t remember a time when Mr Ruppe even complained of being sick. He was a vibrant, kind, funny, generous, genuine man that I have known as long as a lot of my relatives. He will surely be missed and it won’t be the same visiting NY not seeing him around.

I WORKED WITH OFFICER RUPPE IN DIST 1 TPD IN THE EARLY 70'S. TILL THIS DAY I TRULY BELIEVE HE WAS ONE OF THE FINEST PROFESSIONAL POLICE OFFICERS I HAD THE HONOR OF KNOWING. HE WAS A BIG STRAPPING MAN, WITH A WONDERFUL SMILE AND LAUGH. HE WAS RARE AND SPECIAL AS AN INDIVIDUAL......HONOR HIM AND REMEMBER THERE ARE SO FEW OF THIS QUALITY OF MAN.......Mike Bloom TPD/NYPD

Dear Ingrid and Ruppe family
Please accept my condolences on the loss of Helmuth. He is better known though out the Transit Police Department as "Big Red". He was an active and good cop and a really nice guy. He served the people of NYC well. Big Red was at almost all the Transit Police functions. I don't believe he and Ingrid ever missed a NYC Transit Police Florida. He will be missed by many friends. may he "Rest in Peace"

The Executive Board and members of the NYC Retired Transit Police Officers offer our most sincere condolences and sympathies to Ingrid and the Ruppe family. Helmut was one of our Lifetime Members who attended almost all of our meetings and events unless he was travelling overseas. He was good at telling stories of his career in the Transit Police and of his travels to foreign countries. He will be missed by many of his fellow retirees. May he Rest in Peace.
